What is the menstrual cycle?

The menstrual cycle refers to the span of time measured from the first day of a woman’s period to the day before the next period. The cycle itself is controlled by hormones and, in each cycle, these hormones cause the ovary to develop and release an egg (ovulation). The womb lining also starts to thicken.

For many women, the menstrual cycle happens every 28 days however, the term of a cycle varies anything between 21 to 40 days. The period itself is made up of blood and womb lining and typically lasts around 2 to 7 days.
